Overnight packing list
For an overnight hike, a scout should have the right equipment and resources to ensure safety, comfort, and a successful adventure.
Here's a comprehensive list:

Shelter and sleep
- Backpack: durable and with a rain cover. (*) Here's an example of a decent, economical 55L backpack
- Sleeping bag: suitable for the weather conditions. (*)
- Sleeping bag liner: keeps your sleeping bag clean and adds extra insulation.
- Sleeping pad: for insulation and comfort. (*)
- Hiking tent: Lightweight, with stakes and guy lines. Recommend splitting a 2-3 person tent across 2-3 scouts. (^)
- Pack liner or cheap bin liner (large plastic bag) for inside of pack - keeps sleeping back and clothes dry if backpack gets wet.
Clothing
- Moisture-wicking base layers / thermals (top and bottom) - polypropylene or merino wool work best.
- Insulating layer (fleece or down jacket) (*)
- Waterproof and windproof jacket (*)
- Lightweight shirt - should have long sleeves and a collar for both warmth in cold weather and protection from sunburn. A light “t-shirt” could also be carried.
- Hat - wide brimmed ideal for sun protection (*)
- Beanie - great at night
- Quick-drying pants/shorts
- Extra underwear (*)
- Hiking boots: waterproof ideally, and well-broken in (i.e. not the first time you've worn them! Sturdy sneakers work as a fall-back. (*)
- Socks: wool or woollen-blend are warm and cushion the feet (plus extra pairs - one per day). (*)
- Scout scarf
Personal hygiene
- Toothbrush and toothpaste (*)
- (Biodegradable) soap
- Small towel
- Hand sanitizer
- Toilet paper & trowel (for camp spots without facilities)
Navigation & safety
- Head torch + spare batteries. (*)
- Map and compass: know how to use them. (^)
- Personal first aid kit – space blanket, triangular bandage, bandaids, elastoplast strip (covers blisters), compression bandage. Include any personal medications. (*)
- Whistle: for emergency signalling.
- Matches (waterproof best)
Water
- Water Bottles or Hydration System: Carry at least 2 litres. (*)
- Water Purification System: Filter, tablets, or UV purifier. (^)
Food and cooking
- Lightweight, non-perishable meals (freeze-dried, dehydrated) (*)
- Snacks (trail mix, energy bars, dried fruit)
- Stove and fuel: Lightweight backpacking stove, like a furno (^)
- Cooking Pot: Lightweight and compact. (^)
- Personal eating kit – spork, bowl/plate, mug. Lightweight - something like this. (*)
Other
- Sunscreen, roll-on is best
- Insect repellent, roll on is best
- Plastic bag for any rubbish (leave no trace!) or wet clothes

- Breakfast Bars: High-energy options like granola or protein bars.
- Dried Fruit: Raisins, apricots, or apple slices for added energy.
Lunch
- Tortillas or Pita Bread: Lightweight and packable.
- Hard Cheese: Like cheddar or gouda, which can stay fresh longer.
- Cured Meats: Salami or pepperoni, which don’t require refrigeration.
- Trail Mix: A mix of nuts, seeds, dried fruit, and chocolate or yogurt-covered snacks.
Dinner
- Freeze-Dried or Dehydrated Meals: Just add boiling water and let sit.
- Instant Rice or Pasta: Quick to cook and easy to customize.
- Canned Tuna or Chicken: Lightweight pouches are better for packing.
- Ramen Noodles: Easy and fast to prepare with boiling water.
- Instant Soup Packets: Add to your meal or have as a light dinner.
Drinks
- Electrolyte drink mix / hydralite: To replenish salts lost through sweat.
- Instant coffee or tea bags: For a warm drink in the morning or evening.
- Hot chocolate: For a comforting evening drink.
